Towngas Energy Academy is a central research institute established on the Chinese mainland by two energy listed companies -- Hong Kong and China Gas Co. Ltd. and Towngas Smart Energy. As the group's only global R&D center, it focuses on the research and development of applied technologies and the conversion of scientific achievements in the field of clean energy. The institute is committed to becoming a first-class applied industrial research institute in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The research center has established five major research and development centers focused on energy storage, photovoltaics, hydrogen energy, energy digitization, and gas and thermal energy, and is actively planning to build two more research centers on green fuel and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS).
In February 2023, Towngas Energy Academy was established in the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone. In October 2023, it was recognized by the Shenzhen Municipal Science and Technology Innovation Committee as one of the first “Key Innovative Enterprises Introduced in Shenzhen” (the only foreign-funded institution). This recognition supports and encourages the submission of various science and technology plan projects organized and implemented by the Shenzhen Municipal Science and Technology Innovation Committee. The institute was invited to participate as a corporate representative in the 2023 Shenzhen Enterprise Innovation Development Conference.
Backed by the industrial expansion and financial strength of its parent company, Hong Kong and China Gas Co. Ltd., the research institute has over 1,800 square meters of laboratory and office space, nearly 100 full-time and part-time staff, and a full-time R&D team, with 80% of its dedicated research team holding master's or doctoral degrees. The institution has deployed more than 10 technology research and development projects in clean energy, with a total investment of over 70 million yuan in scientific research. The institute has applied for 41 intellectual property rights (with 25 authorized) and published over 10 scientific papers. It has completed a series of new technologies, new processes, new equipment, and new materials development and technical accumulation in related fields.
